Heavy rain floods Shanghai

SHANGHAI, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Heavy rainstorms battered Shanghai Monday morning, causing flooding in many areas of the city.

Accumulated rainwater exceeded 25 cm on some road sections, with around 200 shops along Xinyuan Road flooded, according to municipal flood control headquarters.

The most serious flooding occurred at a pedestrian crossing on Luoshan Road, where floodwater exceeded 120 cm, the headquarters said in a statement.

More than 10 households were flooded in Zhuqiao Township, Pudong New Area and Chengqiao Township in Chongming District.

Over 500 sanitation workers and 15 vehicles were mobilized to clear floodwater, and traffic disrupted by flooding has now been restored.

Rainstorms hit downtown Shanghai and districts of Chongming, Jiading, Baoshan and Pudong, with over 50 mm of rainfall falling within two hours early Monday.

Precipitation exceeded 145.1 mm in Baoshan District from 8 a.m. Sunday to 8 a.m. Monday, setting a record for September, according to meteorological information.
