SYDNEY, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- A software glitch has led to major delays at Sydney's domestic airport early Monday morning, with thousands left stranded on the first day of the Spring school holiday period.
The air traffic control system failure was reported to have occurred at 05:00 (AEST) and was restored at approximately 09:00 (AEST). But during the four hour window air traffic control operators were forced to use slower, manual systems which caused cancellations and long delays.
Air Services Australia has asked passengers to be patient, saying they are "now working to resume to normal operations and clear the backlog of flights."
Other airports around the country have also been disrupted due to the flow-on effects of the glitch.
"If one airport sneezes the others will catch the cold because we're all interconnected," a Brisbane Airport Corporation spokesperson told local media.
