PARIS, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Saint-Etienne's twice comeback in a 2-2 tie with Rennes was not enough to prevent them from losing the third position to Bordeaux in Ligue 1, while nine-time champions Marseille shrugged off a lackluster season start to move up to the fifth place with a 2-0 home victory over Toulouse on Sunday.
Rennes' significant off-season signing Ismaila Sarr had to be substituted in the 37th minute after suffering a tough foul from Kevin Theophile-Catherine.
However, it was Rennes that have broken the deadlock four minutes later, when Benjamin Bourigeaud caught Stephane Ruffier's pass in position and finished a brilliant lob past the helpless Saint-Etienne goalkeeper.
Rennes were unable to maintain their lead back to the locker room, as Gabriel Silva swept captain Loic Perrin's pass into the net in stoppage time.
The two sides converted their own spot kick in the second half. Wahbi Khazri put Rennes ahead again in the 54th minute, followed by Saint-Etienne top scorer Jonathan Bamba's fourth goal of the campaign from the 12-yard spot.
With tasting one point, Saint-Etienne had to surrender the third position to Bordeaux, who beat Guingamp 3-1 on Saturday.
Marseille recorded three victories in a row in all competitions without conceding a goal. Lucas Ocampos became the hero for the southern France's club, as the Argentine assisted Florian Thauvin in the first half, before snatching his second league goal of the season in the 61st minute.
Marseille positioned themselves fifth, one point adrift Saint-Etienne. Paris Saint-Germain, who dropped points for the first time this season with a goalless draw against Montpellier, still took up the top place, one point ahead of defending champions Monaco.
Also on Sunday, promoted Strasbourg lost to Nantes 2-1 at home.
