LONDON, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- One of Britain's geological wonders has emerged as the National Trust's most visited site of the year.
The Giant's Causeway at Antrim in Northern Ireland attracted 665,681 visitors in the past year, including many international tourists wanting to tread in the footsteps of a giant.
Experts for years have argued that the unusual formation of rocks on the coast facing the Atlantic Ocean were created by a volcanic eruption in the distant past, or formed by the crystallisation of sea water.
Many visitors prefer the legend that the stones were built by Irish Giant Finn Maccool as stepping-stones to Scotland to meet his rival Giant Benandonner.
The beauty of the Giant's Causeway earned its place in 1986 on UNESCO's World Heritage Sites, winning its coveted title ahead of the Tower of London and the Palace of Westminster.
