MAIMANA, Afghanistan, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Afghan security forces launched airstrikes leaving at least 10 militants dead and 25 others wounded in northern province of Faryab, an official said Sunday.

The strikes took place Saturday evening in the restive Khawja Sabz Posh and Daulat Abad districts of the province, where a military operation codenamed "Naweed 3 Operation" is ongoing, said Nasratullah Jamshidi, spokesman of army 209 Shaheen Corps based in the area.

"A total of 10 militants, including three key local leaders, were killed and 25 injured while one of their hijacked military vehicle was also destroyed," Jamshidi told Xinhua.

The Taliban has yet to make comments.

Taliban insurgency spreads from its traditional strongholds in the south and east to the once peaceful region in the north, where the militants have been recruiting from among the youth.
