TRIPOLI, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations said Saturday that Libya's Zintan and Tripoli have agreed on the return of the internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Zintan to their homes in the capital.

On Sept. 20 and 21, the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) organized a meeting between delegations from Zintan and Tripoli in Tunis to facilitate a safe and peaceful return of the IDPs in Zintan to Tripoli, the UNSMIL said in a statement.

The meeting also discussed financial compensation and means to reintegrate the IDPs into the host communities, the statement added.

"The two delegations will sign a formal agreement in Libya, and agree on a precise timeline for the peaceful return of IDPs to Tripoli," it added.

Following the violent clashes that erupted between rival armed factions in Tripoli in 2014, more than 20,000 residents there have fled to the mountainous town of Zintan, 150 km southwest of the capital city.
