DHAKA, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- At least 10 people were killed and several others injured by lightning during a tropical storm in two districts of Bangladesh on Saturday.

Additional Police Superintendent Mahfuz Zaman Ashraf told Xinhua from Dinajpur district, some 338 km northwest of capital Dhaka, that "eight persons including two women died and three others were injured in lightning strikes in parts of the district."

Two other people were reportedly killed in Sunamganj district, 296 km northeast of capital Dhaka, by thunderbolt also on Saturday during a tropical storm which swept through several districts.

Sources said the storm flattened thousands of houses in the districts, uprooted trees, leveled electric poles and disrupted power supply in those sub-districts. The storm also caused heavy damage to paddy crops.

Official statistics reportedly showed that thunderbolts caused over 200 deaths in 2016 in the country.
