NEW DELHI, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday announced that all poor in this country will get a home in the next five years.

"By 2022, every poor, whether in urban or rural area, will get a home. Building millions of homes will generate jobs and income," the Prime Minister said while addressing a rally at his parliamentary constituency of Varanasi in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

Stressing that his government's main agenda is development, Modi said: "Governance is not about politics or winning elections. The priority is the well-being of the nation."

Modi, who is currently on a two-day visit of Varanasi, Friday launched several infrastructure projects, flagged off an express train between the holy city and Vadodara city in his homestate of Gujarat, and released a postage stamp.

"Development is solution to all our problems," he said.

Modi had also spelt out his dream to wipe out poverty from India and spoke about his government's efforts to empower the poor by offering them opportunities to change their lives. "No poor person wants to give their children their poverty in inheritance," he said.
