JAKARTA, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- More than 1,000 people in Indonesia's Bali resort island have fled home and taken shelter in safer grounds as a volcano could erupt at any time, a disaster agency official said on Thursday.

Mount. Gunung Agung volcano in Karang Asem district has experienced a spate of seismic activity recently, prompting volcanologists to take precautious measures.

Spokesman from the national disaster agency Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said that people are banned from having activities in the no-go zone.

"Having activity in the dangerous zone must be avoided, because the volcano could erupt at any time," he told Xinhua in a text message.

The spokesman said the increasing seismic activity has forced over 1,259 people to flee home and more people are expected to be evacuated.

Bali, the center of Indonesia's tourism industry, welcomes around 200,000 foreign tourists every month, according to the national statistics bureau.

Gunung Agung volcano is among the 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia, a vast archipelagic nation with over 17,500 islands.
