DHAKA, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- At least nine people were killed and 10 others injured as a Red Crescent truck carrying relief materials for Rohingyas veered off a road in Bangladesh's Bandarban district, 316 km southeast of capital Dhaka, on Thursday morning, an official said.

The accident left nine people dead on the spot and 10 others injured, Azam Khan, a senior official of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, told journalists.

He said the truck went off the road and ended up in a ditch as the driver lost control of the steering.

The official said the accident occurred at about 8 a.m. local time and victims are mostly day laborers.

Bangladesh has high fatality rates for road accidents mainly due to shoddy highways, poorly maintained vehicles and violation of traffic rules by drivers.
