RIYADH, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Saudi Arabia on Wednesday requested a termination of the independent referendum by Iraqi Kurds scheduled for Sept. 25.

Saudi Arabia "looks forward to the wisdom and experience" of Kurdistan Regional Government leader Massoud Barzani not go ahead with the plan, Saudi Press Agency reported, citing an official source in a statement.

It added that in view of the current conditions and risks being experienced by the region, and also to avoid new crises, the plan should be terminated.

Saudi Arabia calls in the statement on all the components of the Iraqi parties concerned to engage in a dialogue for the interests of Iraqi people, and preserve unity and sovereignty of the country.
