VIENNA, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen has expressed disappointment at the speech made by U.S. President Donald Trump at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.

Trump was "addressing his voters in the U.S.," and had spoken of "renationalization", local media on Wednesday quoted Van der Bellen as saying.

As the European Union is presently engaged in trying to achieve progress cooperatively rather than separately, such comments are a direct challenge, particularly when in many member states working together is a "question of existence," Van der Bellen said.

He said all European states are of the opinion that Iran has thus far held to the agreement, and that while Trump criticized it, he did not stipulate which points of the deal Iran has not met.

The Austrian head of state had also personally passed on two letters to the American president following the assembly. The first one was written by an 11-year-old girl who expressed her concern that climate change is indeed real, counter to scepticism from Trump on the issue.

Van der Bellen added a letter of his own in support of the girl, adding that the Paris agreement, which Trump had criticized, represents "great chances for a future-oriented economy and related technologies."
