SOFIA, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and his visiting Polish counterpart Beata Szydlo here on Wednesday said the European Union (EU) should maintain its unity and move at the same speed.

Poland and Bulgaria believed that the unity of the EU was the foundation for the future and development of the EU, Szydlo said at a joint press conference after bilateral talks.

There have been discussions in the EU on the construction of a two-speed Europe, and some countries, mostly from the old part of the EU, have been trying to divide Europe in order to protect their interests, Szydlo said.

All politicians and circles who wanted to divide the EU, actually tried to destroy it, she said.

Meanwhile, countries such as Poland and Bulgaria wanted unity, openness and enlargement of the EU, Szydlo said.

"We are looking for a compromise; we are open for talks in order to be together, and this is the most important message that we today in Sofia can deliver as Prime Ministers of Poland and Bulgaria," she said.

"We will not allow ourselves to be divided because the EU is priceless for all of us," Szydlo added.

"We insist that we should move at the same speed," Borissov said in turn.

Newer EU members would make efforts and catch up to keep Europe united and not to have Europe at two speeds, he said.

With joint efforts, the EU countries should be its equal members, Borissov said.

It would not be easy because each country had its own problems, but it could be achieved through compromise and understanding, he added.
