BEIJING, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Strong performances by semiconductor and new energy vehicle (NEV) companies pushed China's stocks higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.27 percent to close at 3,366 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.97 percent higher at 11,191.13 points.

Combined turnover on the two bourses expanded to 541.69 billion yuan (about 82.5 billion U.S. dollars) from 523.8 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Semiconductor companies led the gains on Wednesday, with Tianshui Huatian Technology Co., Ltd and TongFu Microelectronics Co., Ltd both surging by the daily limit of 10 percent to end the day at 7.99 yuan and 11.51 yuan, respectively.

Market enthusiasm over NEVs continued to grow after authorities signalled the intention to join a line of countries with plans to ban cars running on traditional fuel.

Shares of China's leading NEV maker BYD went up 7.98 percent to end the day at 61.82 yuan per share.

The ChiNext Index, which tracks China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.66 percent to close at 1,892.67 points.
