BEIRUT, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- A shipment of 500 tons of rice was delivered Tuesday at Beirut port as part of Chinese food aid to Syrian refugees in Lebanon and the Lebanese hosting communities.

Lebanon's Social Affairs Minister Pierre Abi Assi and Chinese Ambassador to Lebanon Wang Kejian received the aid at the port.

Abi Assi thanked the Chinese government for providing the aid and its continued support to Lebanon amid the inflow of the Syrian refugees.

"Lebanon has major commitments to the Lebanese people and the Syrians displaced," Abi Assi said, adding that any aid or support would be helpful for the needy people, including the Syrian refugees and the Lebanese hosting communities.

Wang affirmed China's commitment to continuing its aid to the Syrian refugees in Lebanon and their hosting communities.

"We hope that the food aid will contribute to easing the humanitarian situation of the Syrian refugees in Lebanon. Next we will cooperate closely with the Lebanese government to distribute the rice to the Syrian refugees as soon as possible," Wang said.

China has promised to provide a total of 2,764 tons of food aid to the Syrian refugees in Lebanon and their hosting communities, and the rest of the aid will arrive shortly.

In May, China delivered school supplies to the Syrian refugee students in the Bekaa town of Saadnayel, as part of China's pledge made during the United Nations General Assembly to provide the Syrian refugees with 100 million U.S. dollars in aid.

The Chinese government also promised to provide emergency humanitarian food aid worth 2 billion Chinese yuan (304 million dollars) to the developing countries on the routes under the Belt and Road Initiative, which aims to build a trade and infrastructure network that connects Asia with Europe and Africa along the ancient trade routes.
