VALLETTA, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Ground Handling operations of Air Malta will be hived off into a separate company wholly owned by the government, Maltese government announced on Tuesday.

An agreement has been signed between Maltese government and the General Workers' Union, in which all employees working in Ground Handling sections to be assigned to a separate company.

"The new company will offer services to other airlines and it will also manage cargo operations," said Malta's Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi. "It will have a new business plan in order to generate further growth, investment in new equipment, and generate new business."

Air Malta Chairman Charles Mangion said that now the airline can focus more on its core business of flight operations.

Meanwhile, Air Malta has introduced a new system of cheap fares intended to attract more customers, who prefer traveling with just a hand luggage.

"We want Air Malta to be a Mediterranean hub linking Europe with North Africa and the Middle East," said Mangion.
