NEW DELHI, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- A major fire broke out at a school in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh Tuesday, police said.

All 200 students of Rajaji SKD Academy in Rajajipuram area in state capital Lucknow had a narrow escape as teachers and the school authorities managed to evacuate them right on time.

"The fire started on the ground floor of the school and soon spread to other areas. Alert teachers immediately got the students out. There were no casualties," a police official said.

Fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the flames, he said, adding that one portion of the school building has been completely gutted in the fire.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official said.

"The school is a private one. We will book the owners if any kind of negligence is found on their part. We will also investigate if the school had all fire fighting measures," he added.

Fire in Indian schools are not uncommon mainly due to poor safety standards followed by most of them and lack of fire safety equipment on the premises. Enditem
