CHICAGO, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chicago, on Lake Michigan in Illinois, is among the largest cities in the United States, recorded the 500th homicide of 2017 by Monday, with 10 people killed over the weekend, according to the data collected by the Chicago Tribune. It is more than half month late for the U.S. third largest city to reach the mark compared to last year, when the city in U.S. Midwest reported its 500th homicide in late August, the deadliest in decades.

The most recent fatal shooting happened Sunday night at Chicago's Southwest suburb, when a 48-year-old woman was shot to death near her home, and a 37-year-old man was struck in the chest in the same attack. No one was in custody by now.

The city has had 2,721 people shot so far this year, down 11.9 percent from 3,087 reported in the same period of last year.

As a measure to rein in shooting incident in the city, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has announced to add nearly 1,000 officers to the police in a two-year hiring plan.

Chicago reports the highest murder death among U.S. cities over the past two decades.
