PUL-E-KHUMRI, Afghanistan, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- At least six militants loyal to Taliban were killed and 12 others wounded following an Afghan forces' counter-attack raid in the country' northern province of Baghlan, police said Monday.

"The incident took place Sunday evening, when Taliban attacked Bagh-e-Shamal and Surkh Kotal areas of provincial capital Pul-e-Khumri, but they fled of government forces resolute reaction, leaving six fighters dead and 12 others wounded," provincial police Chief Gen. Ekramuddin Sari told Xinhua.

Three civilians also sustained injuries in the militants' mortar shell, he added.

A security personnel, on condition of anonymity, confirmed to Xinhua that one soldier was also killed and another wounded in the incident.

The Taliban has not made immediate comment on the incident yet.

Fighting has escalated in Afghanistan as the Taliban insurgency spreads from its traditional strongholds in the south and east to the once peaceful region in the north, where the militants have been recruiting from among the youth.
