NEW DELHI, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday inaugurated the Sardar Sarovar dam in his home state of Gujarat.

After the inauguration on his 67th birthday, Modi dedicated the Sardar Sarovar dam, the biggest in India, to the nation.

The foundation stone for the dam was laid by India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru 56 years ago, and its construction began in 1987.

The dam is 1.2-km-long and 163 meters deep. Each of its gate weighs over 450 tons and it takes one hour to close them.

The power generated from the dam will be shared by three states, Madhya Pradesh in central India and Maharashtra and Gujarat in the west, according to officials.
