ANKARA, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said late Friday that Turkey would announce its position on the independence referendum of Iraq's Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
Speaking in a live interview with local news channel A Haber, Erdogan said Iraqi Kurdish leader Massoud Barzani's refusal to postpone an independence referendum due on Sept. 25 is "very wrong."
He said Turkey would not allow any moves that would threaten Iraq's territorial integrity.
Turkey will announce its official position on the referendum after the National Security Council meeting on Sept. 22, just days before the planned referendum, Erdogan said.
Earlier in the day, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim and his Iraqi counterpart Haider al-Abadi discussed the planned referendum over the phone.
Both prime ministers reiterated that KRG's decision was wrong and would cause grave consequences. They agreed to work together to prevent the move.
Also on Friday, Iraq's Kurdish regional parliament passed a resolution to hold the Sept. 25 referendum by an overwhelming majority of deputies.
Barzani said on Friday that the vote would not be delayed, despite pressing requests from the United States and other Western powers concerned that tensions between Baghdad and Erbil would affect the war against Islamic State (IS) militants.
