ADEN, Yemen, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Four Yemeni children were killed and more than ten others injured as houses of civilians were shelled by Houthi rebels in the southwestern province of Taiz on Friday evening, a medical official told Xinhua.

Tanks and armored vehicles belonging to the Houthis bombed houses of civilians in Taiz province, causing casualties and serious damage, the local military official said on condition of anonymity.

"Four children were killed as result of the shelling that targeted the residential neighborhood and more than ten others were injured," he said urging humanitarian organizations to provide support in treating the injured people.

A number of neighborhoods in Taiz are controlled by forces loyal to Yemen's government, however, the town faces indiscriminate Houthi shelling attacks every now and then that left many civilians killed and injured.

Both forces loyal to Yemen's internationally-backed government and the Houthi rebels were slammed due to the fall of hundreds of civilian casualties by artillery shelling and rockets in various provinces of the war-torn Arab country.

Yemen has been suffering from a civil war and a Saudi-led military intervention for around two years. The civil war began after the Houthi militants with support from forces loyal to the former president ousted the UN-backed transitional government and occupied capital Sanaa militarily in September 2014.

The legitimate government controls the south and some eastern parts, while the Houthi/Saleh alliance controls the other parts including the capital Sanaa.

The UN has sponsored peace talks between the warring factions several times, but the factions failed to reach common ground.

The civil war, ground battles and airstrikes have already killed more than 10,000 people, half of them civilians, injured more than 35,000 others and displaced over two millions, according to humanitarian agencies. Enditem
