SARAJEVO, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Fashionable garments made from recycled material highlighted the exhibition of "Waste is Taste," which opened on Thursday night in the Bosnia and Herzegovina's (BiH) capital Sarajevo.
Started in 2012, the "Waste is Taste" exhibition has been dedicated to the concept of making fashionable and wearable clothes from the things people usually call "garbage."
In this year's edition, three designers were awarded for their works with Maja Modrijan from Slovenia winning the top prize. Modrijan was followed by Laila Music, and the third place winners Adna Brkic and Nedzmina Comor, all from BiH.
According to the top prize winner Modrijan, fashionable garment making takes time and effort.
"The newest garment I made were the shoes that I made a month ago, the rest of the outfit is combined from my previous work and the skirt is completely made of the textile labels from clothes I have collected from people I know for five years. In the end, I needed one month to make a skirt," Modrijan told Xinhua.
Alma Terzic, a 15-year-old girl, points out on the importance of waste selection and how it would be easier if artists would have the opportunity to find products they need more easily.
"I make dresses from recycled material for one year, but it is very difficult to find quality and clean material that can later be cleaned and processed," said Terzic.
Thanks to the talents of these designers, the "garbage" which would end up on landfills are given a new value. And the exhibition is trying to raise the public awareness of exploiting more uses of the old things before discarding them into the trash bins.
Adnan Comor, one of the organizers, told Xinhua that after five editions, the "Waste is Taste" has become a regionally recognized project, which attracts many artists from the region, as well as the whole Europe.
