UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council on Thursday approved the recommendations of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres concerning the size, operational aspects and mandate of the UN Verification Mission in Colombia.
The Verification Mission, whose establishment was approved by the Security Council on July 10, is tasked to oversee the next phase of a peace deal between the Colombian government and the country's largest rebel group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
The Verification Mission succeeds a UN mission of unarmed observers tasked by the Security Council in January 2016 to monitor and verify the laying down of arms, and to help monitor and verify the cease-fire following the signing of a peace agreement between the Colombian government and FARC.
The new mission will be responsible for the verification of the reintegration of rebel fighters into political, economic and social life, the implementation of personal and collective security and protection measures, and comprehensive security and protection programs for communities and organizations in the territories.
The new mission will begin its activities on Sept. 26.
