RIGA, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics and his Danish counterpart Anders Samuelsen met here on Thursday for talks on regional security and the European Union's future, the Latvian Foreign Ministry informed.

The ministers described bilateral relations and economic exchange between Latvia and Denmark as excellent. They praised good cooperation in regional formats, particularly NB-8, bringing together the three Baltic states and eight Nordic countries.

The Latvian and Danish foreign ministers noted close defense cooperation between their countries. Rinkevics thanked Denmark for its contribution to strengthening Latvia's security by participating in the NATO-led airspace policing mission in the Baltics.

Latvia and Denmark are participants of the multinational coalition that is fighting IS in Iraq where Latvian troops are serving with Danish forces.

Both officials agreed on the need to maintain EU unity and to find ways of boosting cooperation, especially following Britain's exit from the EU. The ministers stressed the need for all member states' active involvement in the debate on the EU's future.

This was Danish Foreign Minister Samuelsen's first visit to Latvia.
