WINDHOEK, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- In efforts to fulfill the Sustainable Development Goal 4, 'Quality Education', the United Nations (UN) system in Namibia will partner with Read Namibia to support and foster a reading culture in the county.

The Read Namibia is a broad coalition of businesses, teachers, librarians, booksellers, cultural organizations, and diplomats who seek to improve the quality of education and on Sept. 16, in the capital, Windhoek will celebrate and join forces with the United Nations.

The event will be opened by UN Resident Coordinator Kiki Gbeho and will have activities including storytelling, word games, quizzes, and sessions where children get to make their own short books to take home.

Gbeho in a statement on Tuesday said that teaching children not only to read, but to love to read, is one of the most important gifts which can be passed to children.

According to the UN, studies show that children who have strong reading skills also have other skills for success, which include, better attention and concentration skills, greater general knowledge, and confidence in exploring and learning.

"It's therefore important for Namibian children not only to learn to read, but to learn to love to read...we all have a role in fostering a reading culture in Namibia," Gbeho said.

Furthermore through the campaign, sessions for parents on how to foster their children's love of reading will also take place and Read Namibia will give away books as prizes for winners.

Meanwhile, the coalition is working together with Namibia's Education Ministry which also is striving to promote a culture of reading in the country.
