BEIJING, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- The water stored at Miyun Reservoir, Beijing's largest, hit a 17-year record of 1.9 billion cubic meters on Monday, according to local authorities.

The storage of the reservoir reached 1.7 billion cubic meters in June. Thanks to upstream rainfall and the south-to-north water diversion project delivering water from central China's Hubei Province, the storage exceeded 1.8 billion in July and 1.9 billion this month.

The government of Miyun District has formed a 1,200-people team, led by district leaders, to safeguard the reservoir and its surrounding environment, and has also intensified water quality monitoring.

Built in 1960, Miyun Reservoir in northern Beijing has a capacity of 4.4 billion cubic meters and a surface area of up to 188 square km. However, due to lack of rain, it has been operating at less than a quarter of its capacity for many years.
