Jordan, Russia share common stances on Syria: Russian FM

AMMAN, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Monday that Russia and Jordan share common stances on Syria, stressing that the two countries are keen to enhance cooperation to combat terrorism.

The Russian foreign minister made his remarks at a joint press conference with his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi, while he said that Russia agreed with Jordan to boost cooperation in fighting terrorism.

Lavrov also said that Jordan had made a contribution to the ceasefire in Syria, hailing the creation of de-escalation zones in southern Syria as "very successful."

Safadi stressed that Jordan wants security and stability restored in Syria and that the Kingdom wants all foreign fighters to leave Syria.

In the press conference, the two ministers stressed on the need to continue the war against terrorism at different fronts including the military and the ideological levels.

Safadi added that resolving the crisis in Syria was in the interest of Jordan, noting that Jordan supports all efforts to help Syria restore stability and security.

The two sides also looked into the Palestinian issue, emphasizing on the two-state solution to resolve the decade-long issue.

Also on Monday, King Abdullah II of Jordan met with the Russian official and discussed regional developments.

Discussions focused on finding a political solution to the crisis in Syria and the need to sustain the ceasefire in the south of Syria.

King Abdullah II and Lavrov also discussed efforts to resume peace talks between the Palestinians and the Israelis.
