MEXICO CITY, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from the 8.2-magnitude quake in Mexico rose to 95, after the government of the southern state of Oaxaca reported five new deaths on Monday.

According to Oaxaca Governor Alejandro Murat, 76 people died in the state, with most of them in the region of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, where the worst impact was felt.

Murat said that about 800,000 inhabitants of 41 municipalities in Oaxaca are affected by the most intense earthquake the country has suffered in the last century.

Another 15 people were killed in the neighboring Chiapas state and four others in Tabasco, Mexico's civil defence chief Luis Felipe said earlier.

The powerful earthquake struck off Mexico's southern coast late Thursday night.
