ISLAMABAD, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- At least two people were killed and another injured when a fire erupted in a government building in the country's capital city of Islamabad on Sunday afternoon, local media reported.

The building houses several government and private offices and was located in the red zone area of the capital near embassies and the parliament.

Rescue officials said the three people have jumped out of the building after it caught fire to save their lives and sustained injuries.

The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital where two of them succumbed to their injuries. The condition of the other person is critical, said hospital sources.

The killed and the injured people were staffers at a call center in the building, police said.

Seven fire tenders took part in the operation to douse the flames, according to the rescue officials.

The firefighters managed to extinguish the ablaze after two hours of hectic work and later continued the "cooling process."

According to the initial investigation by the police officials, the fire was caused by short-circuiting in the ground floor of the six-storey building.

Two vehicle parked in the parking area of the building were also damaged as a result of the fire.

Rangers and police were also present at the site to join the rescue work.
