NEW DELHI, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in parts of southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu Thursday issued a flood alert, officials said.

The alert was issued in wake of heavy rain in catchment areas of neighboring Karnataka state and releasing of water from Krishnagiri dam.

"Flood alert has been issued in five districts of Tamil Nadu along the banks of South Pennai river as more water is being released from Krishnagiri dam. Heavy rain in catchment areas in Karnataka has led to increased inflow into the dam," an official said.

According to officials, the alert has been issued to people living near Thenn Pennai river banks in five districts of Krishnagiri, Villupuram, Dharmapuri, Cuddalore and Tiruvannamalai.

"Heavy rain has led to Krishnagiri dam reaching its full capacity of 52 feet. More than 5,300 cusecs of water is being released from the dam into Thenn Pennai river leading to flood alerts," the official said.

Last month floods hit eastern state of Bihar killing over 514 people and affecting 17.1 million people across the state.
