NAIROBI, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- At least seven people were killed and scores injured in a grisly road accident involving five vehicles along a busy highway in Nairobi on Wednesday evening.

Kasarani divisional police commander Robinson Mboloi said they have launched investigations into the accident on Thika Superhighway Wednesday evening.

"We are yet to determine the exact number of those injured as well as the cause of the accident. We are urging members of the public to stay calm," Mboloi said.

He said the accident occurred after driver of a truck carrying building bricks lost control after one of its tyres burst, hit a mini-bus which hit rail guards, and then overturned landing on a 14-seater commuter mini-bus.

The police commander said the road has been cleared following a major traffic snarl up, as a result of the accident which caused temporary closure of the scene.

"We have launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the accident, as the injured have been rushed to various hospitals for treatment," he said.

Road accidents still continue to occur despite stringent traffic rules which were introduced two years ago by the government to help curb road carnage.

An estimated 3,000 Kenyans die in road accidents annually despite concerted efforts by the state and the private sector to promote safety on the highways, according to the National Transport Safety Authority. Enditem
