RIGA, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics and his Greek counterpart Nikolaos Kotzias met in Riga on Wednesday, with bilateral ties and the European Union's future in the focus of the meeting's agenda, the Latvian Foreign Ministry informed.

While discussing bilateral relations, the foreign ministers especially stressed the necessity to renew bilateral agreements on educational and cultural cooperation.

Rinkevics noted that it is essential to develop cooperation between the two countries on the political level in order to step up cultural exchange, which is important as Latvia prepares to mark the centenary of its statehood.

The talks also touched on the Cyprus issue, as well as the situation in the Western Balkans.

Speaking at a joint news conference following the talks, Rinkevics said that Latvia sees a great potential for cooperation with Greece on energy, transport and logistics -- developing transport routes from the Middle East and using Greek ports and railway links.

The ministers also exchanged views on the European Union's future and voiced readiness to continue active dialogue aimed at increasing the bloc's political and economic clout in the world.

They agreed that relations between the UK and the EU must stay as close and constructive as possible after Brexit.

Kotzias noted Greece and Latvia have many common interests as they both belong to the family of the EU's small and medium-sized countries.

The Greek minister also mentioned the necessity to ensure strong EU borders to improve security in the bloc's member states.
