CAIRO, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Egypt strongly condemned on Wednesday violence against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.

Egyptian foreign ministry condemned the act of violence against Muslims in Myanmar's Rakhine state that left many dead and forced thousands of them to flee to Bangladesh.

The ministry called on the authorities in Myanmar to take action and provide necessary protections to the Rohingya minority to avoid further humanitarian deterioration.

The statement expressed Egypt's full support of all regional and international efforts aiming at addressing the serious crisis.

It also urged the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to exert more efforts to find an effective and lasting solution to this problem.

Media reports said violence erupted in Myanmar's Rakhine state on Aug. 25 when security forces launched an operation against the Rohingya Muslim community, one of the world's largest stateless communities.

On Tuesday, the UN said 123,600 Rohingya Muslims had crossed into Bangladesh since the crackdown began.
