RAMALLAH, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas warned Tuesday of the "serious danger" posed by Israeli settlement to the future of political process, official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.

Abbas made the remarks at his reception of Peter Maurer, head of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), in Ramallah city.

Israeli settlement "contradicts the international law and all resolutions of international legitimacy," he said.

The president also briefed the ICRC chief on "the latest developments in Palestinian territories and the suffering of Palestinian people due to Israeli occupation."

Abbas reaffirmed the commitment of the Palestinians to peace based on the two-state solution and establish an independent Palestinian state along the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Abbas also stressed the determination of the Palestinian leadership to end the internal split between Hamas and the National Consensus Government.

For his part, Maurer explained the efforts made by ICRC to apply International Humanitarian Law in the Palestinian territories.

Earlier in the day, Maurer met with Hamas chief Yehya Sinwar, and discussed with him the humanitarian crises experienced by the Gazans.

He also met with representatives of Palestinian civil society organizations in Gaza and families of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons.

The ICRC chief is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday.
