BEIRUT, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Rafic Hariri Beirut International Airport (RHBIA) announced Tuesday that it served during the first eight months of 2017 more than 5.5 million passengers, up half a million year on year.

According to the official figures, the airport has seen 5,538,185 passengers since the beginning of this year, with 1,067,471 in August, a year-on-year increase of 17 percent.

The Lebanese government announced last week that it intends to expand RHBIA so it would accommodate 12 million passengers per year, and further to receive 24 million passengers per year in future with later plans.

The annual revenue generated by the airport is estimated to be around 300 million U.S. dollars, said the finance ministry.
