DHAKA, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- The death toll of sinking of several boats packed with Rohingya people fleeing from Myanmar in a border river in southeastern Bangladesh rose to 38 on Friday, after another 15 bodies were retrieved.

"Another 15 bodies were recovered on Friday morning which takes the number of total death toll to 38 from 23 on Thursday," said Chailau Marma, additional superintendent of police in Bangladesh's Cox's Bazar district, some 292 km southeast of the capital Dhaka.

He said the bodies were recovered from the Naf River dividing Bangladesh and Myanmar after the boats capsized on Wednesday.

Marma told Xinhua that a search operation was still underway for the missing people.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said Wednesday that more than 18,000 Rohingya people had fled to Bangladesh from Myanmar's western Rakhain state amid a fresh wave of violence in the region since Aug. 25.
