PHNOM PENH, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen on Wednesday called on the people to continue supporting the Cambodian People's Party (CPP), saying that voting for the CPP is to continue defending the country's hard-won peace.

The Southeast Asian nation is scheduled to hold the sixth general election on July 29, 2018.

Hun Sen said the CPP has played and will continue to play the most important role in maintaining the country's peace and development.

"We must join together to protect peace at any cost for continued development," he said during a visit to some 13,000 garment workers in the Vattanac Industrial Park on the southwestern outskirts of Phnom Penh.

"There is no peace, there is no development," the 65-year-old prime minister said, pointing out to some war-torn countries in the Middle East and in Africa.

Hun Sen said that although he is old now, but he is still fit enough to continue leading the country.

"If the people still need and vote for me, I still continue leading this country," he said.

Cambodia holds general election once in every five years.

In the last general election on July 28, 2013, the CPP won 68 parliamentary seats against 55 seats for the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party in the 123-seat National Assembly.
