Albania's new parliament to convene on Sept. 9

TIRANA, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Albania's newly elected parliament is scheduled to be first convened on Sept. 9, 2017, a decree of Albanian President Ilir Meta announced Tuesday.

This will be the official start of the ninth Albanian legislature which came out of the general elections held on June 25, 2017 where the Socialist Party (SP) won a landslide victory against the Democratic Party.

According to the parliament's regulation, the first session is usually chaired by the most senior MP.

Also, parliament elects three MPs for the secretariat, which will handle the procedures for the election of the new speaker of the Assembly.

The new Albanian parliament has 140 lawmakers. 74 lawmakers belong to the ruling Socialist Party, 43 belong to the opposition Democratic Party, 19 belong to the former ruling party Socialist Movement for Integration, 3 belong to the Party for Justice, Integration and Unity and 1 MP belongs to the Social Democratic Party.

The laws related to implementation of the justice reform, namely vetting law which foresees the scanning of Albania's 800 judges and prosecutor as well as laws deemed crucial to country's European Union integration remain high on Albanian parliament's agenda, according to new government.

In the meantime, Albanian Premier Edi Rama who will run the country for a second mandate has vowed to maintain a constructive approach regarding the relations and communication with the Albanian opposition parties.
