NEW DELHI, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Heavy rains in the past 24 hours have brought India's financial capital Mumbai to a standstill.

Road, rail and air traffic have been widely disrupted in the city due to the heavy rains, accompanied by strong winds, officials said Tuesday.

While most flights are experiencing a 20-minute delay on average, rail services have been affected, with most trains either running late or being cancelled.

"Large parts of Mumbai are experiencing waterlogging and several low-lying areas have been flooded in the city, slowing down traffic movement and causing jams," a traffic official said.

The weather department has warned of intermittent heavy to very heavy rains over the next two to three days, which has sparked fears of more waterlogging across the city.

"There is an upper air circulation over southern Rajasthan and there is also a low-pressure area over south east of Odisha and neighbourhood," K.S. Hosalikar, a weather official, said.

"Both these systems are acting together indicating a lot of rainfall activity is expected. Further enhancement in the rain activity is expected for the next 48 to 72 hours," he added.
