LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Up to 12 people were killed and several others injured after a car bomb targeted a convoy of Afghan forces in the southern Helmand province Sunday night, a security official said Monday.

"It was late night when a terrorist driving an explosive-laden car blew it up next to a military convoy on a road leading to Nawa district killing 12 people on the spot and injuring few others," the official told Xinhua but declined to be identified, saying authorized officials would talk to media.

Meantime, spokesman for provincial government Omar Zawak has confirmed the incident, saying 13 persons including security personnel and civilians were killed and 19 others with majority of them civilians sustained injuries.

Nawa district in the restive Helmand province with Lashkar Gah as its capital, 555 km south of Kabul, was captured by government troops months ago.
