ISLAMABAD, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- At least two Pakistani soldiers were killed and three others injured in a landmine blast in the country's northwest tribal region of South Waziristan on Sunday, said a military statement.
The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), a mouthpiece of Pakistan army, said that the incident took place when a roadside planted landmine explosion hit a military vehicle in Barmal area of South Waziristan, a tribal region bordering Afghanistan.
The forces'vehicle was patrolling the area during a search operation by the army when it struck a landmine.
Two personnel died on the spot while three others were critically injured as their vehicle was completely destroyed in the incident.
Security forces rushed to the site and shifted the bodies and injured to a field hospital in the Wana district of the region.
Following the attack, forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation, but no arrests were reported.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.
South Waziristan, a mountainous region, was once the stronghold of Pakistani Taliban and foreign militants until Pakistan army launched the Operation Rah-e-Nijat (path to salvation) against the terrorists in June 2009 and took complete control of the area in less than six months.
According to statistics, at least 619 militants were killed and 83 captured as others rushed to other tribal regions or crossed the border into neighboring Afghanistan.
