HOUSTON, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- The eyewall of Hurricane Harvey made landfall on the southern coast of the U.S. state of Texas, about 400 km away from Houston.

Hurricane Harvey strengthened into a Category 4 storm Friday evening, the first storm with this kind of power to hit Texas in 56 years.

Residents in some areas should expect widespread flooding and rainfall through the weekend and numerous road closures.

As Hurricane Harvey approaches, Governor of Texas Greg Abbott on Friday asked all Texans to heed the warnings of local officials.

Abbott said that President Donald Trump has promised to offer federal resources to Texas ahead of Hurricane Harvey's arrival.

At Abbott's order, more than 700 members of the Texas Army and Air National Guards, Texas State Guard and the Texas Military Department are on standby throughout the state.
