BEIJING, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- China's national observatory Friday evening issued a yellow alert for Typhoon Pakhar, which is expected to hit south China's Guangdong Province on Sunday.

At 5 p.m. Friday, the eye of Pakhar was at sea 220 km to the northeast of Manila, capital of the Philippines, packing winds of up to 23 meters per second, the National Meteorological Center (NMC) said in a statement.

The NMC has forecast that the typhoon will move into the South China Sea and make landfall near the cities of Shenzhen and Zhanjiang. Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan and Yunnan provinces will see torrential rain in the coming days, it said.

The NMC suggested local governments take precautions against possible geological disasters, and ships in affected areas return to port.

China has a four-tier color-coded system for severe weather, with red being the most serious, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
