LOS ANGELES, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Gabrielle Carteris has been re-elected as President of Screen Actors Guild -- American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), according to the announcement of the performers' union Thursday evening.

Ballots for the national officers election of SAG-AFTRA were mailed to approximately 144,000 eligible voters on July 25. Carteris received 14,674 votes in 28,988 voting, despite facing several strong rivals.

"I'm deeply humbled that our members have entrusted me with the privilege and honor of continuing to lead our great union," said Carteris in a statement posted on the official website of SAG-AFTRA.

"During the campaign I pledged to work every day to protect and empower our SAG-AFTRA members, and I will keep that commitment. I look forward to listening to all of our members, not just those who voted for me," she said.

"We must continue to work together to truly realize our potential," she added.

As a working actor for nearly 30 years, 56-year-old Carteris is best known for her role as Andrea Zuckerman during the early seasons of the 1990s television series "Beverly Hills, 90210".

She was elected as executive vice president of SAG-AFTRA in 2012 and assumed the position of acting president of the union following the death of the previous president Ken Howard on March 23, 2016. She was then elected by the national board as president of SAG-AFTRA to fill the remaining 16 months of Howard's term in April 2016.

The union's executive vice president and seven vice president positions will be elected by the delegates at SAG-AFTRA's biennial convention, which will take place in Los Angeles in October.
