LUANDA, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- The People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), the ruling party in power since the national independence of Angola in 1975, expects to win the general elections held Wednesday.
By winning the balloting, the top MPLA member on its list, candidate Joao Gonsalves Lourenco, will automatically become the president of Angola.
Joao Martins, MPLA Political Bureau secretary for political and electoral matters, said Thursday that his party's victory is "unquestionable," citing preliminary assessment of data provided by the party's agents.
Martins said 5 million votes have already been tallied throughout the country.
He praised Angolans for their massive participation and sense of responsibility in the elections.
The National Electoral Commission (CNE) has announced that it will start presenting election results on Thursday.
Angolan's cast their ballots on Wednesday at 12,512 polling stations, many of them installed in schools or even tents throughout the country.
More than 9.3 million Angolans were registered to take part in the general elections, which will also result in the election of the vice president and 220 members of parliament.
