KIEV, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Ukrainian army said Wednesday it will send monitors to observe the Belarusian-Russian joint military exercise West 2017.

"At the invitation of the Belarusian side, between Sept. 16 and Sept. 20, two Ukrainian military inspectors will observe the exercise," the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said in a statement.

The observers will be sent to the drills under the Vienna Document 2011 on Confidence- and Security-Building Measures, the statement said.

The Vienna Document is an agreement between the participating states of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, which enables the countries to exchange objective information regarding their military activities and exercises.

The West 2017 drills will be held from Sept. 14 to 20 in Belarus, and will involve up to 12,700 troops.

Earlier this month, Belarus said that representatives of several international organizations, as well as military observers from Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Sweden and Norway had been invited to monitor the exercise.
