HARARE, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Ten people died and 13 others were injured when a commuter omnibus collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle in Murehwa, 59 km east of the capital Harare on Monday, police said.

Police spokesperson Charity Charamba was quoted by the state-run Herald newspaper Tuesday as saying that the commuter omnibus was evading a vehicle inspection department (VID) check point when it rammed into the oncoming vehicle.

"A commuter omnibus was travelling from Murehwa towards Harare with about 23 passengers. It was stopped at a VID checkpoint and the driver wanted to evade the check point. He then went into the right lane, which is the opposite lane, where there was also another commuter omnibus," Charamba said.

Charamba urged drivers to be always cautious when on the roads and to obey road rules and regulations.

The accident comes barely a month after 11 people were burnt beyond recognition while 14 others were seriously injured when a car collided head-on with another vehicle in Mvurwi, 69 km north of Harare.

Road accidents are a common occurrence in Zimbabwe's roads, with police mostly attributing the accidents to speeding.
