ANKARA, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu will visit Iraq on Wednesday amid debate over the independence referendum to be held by Iraqi Kurdish region next month, official source said on Tuesday.

Cavusoglu is scheduled to meet with Iraqi President Fuad Masum, Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi and other high-ranking officials, according to a written statement released by the ministry.

Subsequently he will head to the northern Iraqi city of Erbil to meet Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) President Masoud Barzani, it added.

Iraqi ambassador to Ankara Hisham al-Alawi said that the Iraqi Prime Minister would visit Turkey after resolving a dispute over a Turkish military deployment in northern Iraq.

Cavusoglu and his Iraqi counterpart is laying grounds for Iraqi Prime Minister's visit to Turkey, according to the ambassador.

The visit comes amid debate for a controversial independence referendum by Iraqi Kurds in northern Iraq scheduled for Sept. 25, which Turkey staunchly opposes.
