Bangladesh's four operators add 10 mln subscribers in first half of 2017

DHAKA, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- The total number of Bangladesh's mobile phone subscribers reached nearly 136 million at the end of June 2017 with addition of about 10 million new users in the first six months of this year, statistics of the country's telecom regulator showed Monday.

With nearly one million new addition in June, according to Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission ( BTRC) data, the number of subscribers in the country reached 135.982 million.

The total number of mobile phone subscribers has reached 135.013 million at the end of May.

The number of subscribers of the country's four mobile operators -- Grameenphone, Banglalink, Robi and Teletalk -- at the end of June, 2017 stood at 61.579 million, 31.572 million, 39.570 million and 3.260 million respectively, the BTRC data showed.

Bangladesh has now four mobile companies, three of them including Grameenphone, Robi and Banglalink are foreign-backed cellphone operators.

The number of mobile companies in Bangladesh has fallen from six to four after merger of two operators while another suspended its operations.

Following the recent merger of Robi and Airtel, the merged company in Bangladesh is now known as Robi Axiata Limited.

On the other hand, the mobile service of Citycell, the country's oldest mobile operator, has remained suspended since October last year.
